Is Your Web Content Accessible?
What makes your content accessible? It is important to adhere to some basic standards so that you can communicate clearly and concisely. Communicating online is a relatively new endeavor for society. The abundance of online content ranges from – profoundly useful and interesting to complete drivel. This makes it imperative that you be able to navigate through it with ease in order to sort through the effluent, and communicate your message effectively.
The integrity of sensory, informational content (text, visual, sound) is key to communicating clearly. That is why the World Wide Web Consortium Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 were written. These standards were developed to afford online access to all; not just disabled or challenged individuals.
With an aging population you need to be aware of diminishing visual acuity, et cetera. The Canadian National Institute for the Blind – CNIB website is an excellent example of how they have made their site accessible for visually impaired users. It’s all about improving the User Experience (UX) through improving the User Interface (UI). See above: detail of CNIB website page – larger icons make it easier to control slider navigation functions.
The WCAG 2.0 Guidelines cover everything from: writing web content in clear language, to providing alternate text for images, to ensuring that anyone can navigate your website with just a keyboard. In Ontario we have the Accessibility Standard for Information and Communication through the Access Ontario Disabilities Act (AODA). These are based on global standards that are being implemented worldwide in different timeframes.
